Why correctional beds are different from standard bunk beds

Correctional environments demand beds that resist tampering, concealment, and repeated impact. Standard residential bunk beds are not engineered for this. Procurement should evaluate three pillars: structural integrity, anti-vandal detail, and verifiable load performance.

Anti-vandal construction details that matter

• Welded (not bolted) joints to remove removal points
• Minimal hollow cavities where contraband could be hidden
• Reinforced tube wall thickness (0.8–1.2 mm standard, thicker on request)
• Anti-tip fixing points to secure the frame to the wall or floor
• Powder-coated, rust-resistant finish for hygiene and durability

Load capacity and how it is verified

For correctional use, rated load should be documented, not assumed. Zehao heavy-duty models are rated at 250 kg per level (standard models 200 kg), with SGS laboratory load testing. A Guinea prison project was supplied with 1,500 double-deck steel beds at 400 kg capacity, shipped in 6 containers to Conakry in 2024.

Certifications buyers should require

Require ISO 9001, EN 747 / EN 1725 compliance for bunk-bed safety, CE marking, and SGS test reports. These documents should travel with the shipment and be available before award.
