The 2026 Student Housing Crunch: What Procurement Teams Get Wrong About Dorm Beds | Zehao World
The University of Johannesburg received 99,472 accommodation applications in February 2026. It had 7,015 beds. Ireland is short 15,000 student beds now, 42,000 by 2035. India runs 7.5 million on-campus beds for 43.3 million students.
Governments are funding new dormitories. That money ends up as a furniture purchase order, and if you are bidding on one, here is what to lock down with your bunk bed manufacturer before you sign.

1. Load rating, with the test report
A catalog number is not a load rating. Ask for the report. Our steel bunk beds are SGS tested at 200 kg per berth; a 120 kg version covers tighter budgets. Both carry the same frame warranty.
2. Certificates your tender will list
European tenders call for EN 747 certified bunk beds, plus EN 1725, CE marking and an ISO 9001 factory. We ship the full certificate set with every wholesale order, and buyers in Australia, Bhutan and Serbia submitted ours without rework. Ask for them early. Our EN 747 compliance guide breaks the standard down line by line.

The four-sleeper layout above is our Heavy-Gauge Steel Triple Bunk Bed.
3. Beds per square metre
Space is money. Dormitory projects live or die on footprint, and a triple bunk puts four sleepers in the floor space one single bed would take. Lockable cabinets under the lower berth keep students from stuffing belongings under mattresses.

For lighter configs, the Twin Over Twin Bunk Bed with Storage Stairs is our most quoted student accommodation model.

4. Container loading and lead time
Flat-pack matters more than unit price once the freight bill lands. Our beds nest in stacks, so a 40ft container carries more sets with less void space. Two people, one page of instructions, done. The math is in our container loading guide.
5. OEM, ODM and MOQ
Need a RAL color, a taller guardrail, your logo on the headboard? We build OEM and ODM orders on the factory floor and quote MOQ per project, not per unit. A dormitory furniture supplier who quotes without asking your room dimensions is guessing. Don't accept a guess.
Send us your room size and headcount. You get back a per-room layout, a factory-direct quote, and a lead time you can plan a September move-in around.
