What Counts as a Murphy Bed

The name covers several constructions, and project specifications rarely agree on which word to use. A Murphy bed and a wall bed describe the same idea: a bed that pivots down from a vertical stored position. A cabinet bed is a wall bed whose folded form is a complete, self-supporting cabinet rather than a flat door panel. A fold-away, fold-down or pull-down bed is a descriptive term that gets applied to all of them.

The practical difference for a project is the fixing method. A wall-anchored bed transfers the load into the building structure and gives the slimmest folded profile. A free-standing cabinet bed carries the load in its own frame and needs no structural fixing — the right choice for rented buildings, listed interiors and rooms where the tenant may not drill into the wall. How Much Space a Wall Bed Actually Returns

The number that matters to a buyer is not the folded size but the floor area recovered. A single or double wall bed normally returns roughly 4–6 m², which is the difference between a room that only works as a bedroom and a convertible space — bedroom and office, bedroom and playroom. In commercial terms it means one floor plate can be sold or let in more than one configuration: guest room by night, meeting or study space by day; second bedroom for peak season, living space off season.

Folding is a single-person operation. The bed locks open and locks closed, and a fold-down support leg takes the load in the sleeping position, so it does not rely on the wall or on the operator's strength to stay up.

The frame is welded on our own tube-cutting and coating lines, so non-standard sleeping areas, folding direction and cabinet finishes are manufacturing changes rather than special projects. Mattress thickness of 10–15 cm is the usual specification; hotel orders can be built to a brand-standard density and cover.

What to Check Before You Order

• Fix method — free-standing cabinet or wall-anchored frame. This decides whether the installation team needs structural fixing.
• Load rating and test documents — ask for the static load figure and the test report, not just a catalogue claim. Our units are rated 200 kg per sleeping position with an SGS report on file.
• Mechanism and support leg — check that the bed locks both open and closed, and that the load is carried by a leg or frame in the sleeping position.
• Frame material — welded steel tube and an anti-rust coating outlast the particle-board cabinets common in retail wall beds, which matters in humid climates and high-turnover rooms.
• Spare parts and repairability — confirm that hinges, gas struts and fittings can be re-ordered so a single damaged unit does not take a room out of service.
• Packing and instruction — KD flat-pack with an assembly drawing and a folding-instruction label reduces installation time and end-user damage claims.

Load Rating and Custom Options

A wall bed carries adults and plus-size users getting in and out of a raised surface, plus a mattress, every day — so the load figure matters more than the folded size. Our sleeping positions are statically load-tested to 200 kg (approx. 440 lb) with an SGS report on file, using the same welded steel frame as our bunk, loft and dormitory beds. A lighter frame rated to around 120 kg is available for markets where that satisfies the local standard.

Because the frame is cut and welded in-house rather than bought as a fixed-size kit, sizes beyond single and double are a manufacturing change rather than a new project: queen, king and XL sleeping areas are built to order, in centimetres or inches. The steel frame is powder-coated to any RAL reference — black, white, grey and anthracite being the common choices for a modern or industrial interior — and the cabinet can be produced in a wood-grain or solid finish to match an existing bedroom range. Are Murphy beds worth it in a rental apartment?

Usually yes, if the unit has a room that is underused. A wall bed converts a second bedroom into usable living or working space, and in serviced apartments it lets an operator bill the same floor area as both a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom unit. Because the MFAB series is free-standing, it can be installed without modifying the building — which matters when the property is leased.

How much floor area does a wall bed need?

Budget the sleeping area plus roughly 70–80 cm of clear floor in front of the cabinet for fold-down and access. A single unit frees about 4–6 m² when closed. In practice it is one of the beds you fold up and put away when the room has to serve a different purpose — office, playroom or teenage bedroom. The freestanding cabinet itself stands roughly 45 cm deep, so a wall bed suits narrow rooms where a permanent bed would block the circulation route from door to window.

Can a wall bed go into a room with a low ceiling?

Yes, provided the cabinet height plus the folding arc is allowed for. Single and double units are built around a folded cabinet height of approximately 105 cm, which leaves headroom in most bedroom and annexe spaces. Do you supply wall beds for hotel and resort projects?

Yes — hospitality and rental projects are the main use. We supply folding and space-saving beds in container quantities to hotel groups, serviced apartment operators and furniture importers, and we can build to a brand-standard mattress size, RAL colour and a private-label carton. Project quantities are quoted with container loading and freight together.

What is the lead time for a container order?

Production is normally 25–30 days after deposit receipt, plus sea freight. A 40HQ takes approximately 180–220 sets in single configuration as KD flat-pack, so most first orders are planned as one or two containers. We can also quote smaller trial quantities before a container commitment.

Can the cabinet finish match an existing bedroom set?

The cabinet is available in wood-grain or solid panel finishes, and the steel frame is powder-coated to a RAL reference of your choice. If you have a furniture range to match, send a colour sample or the RAL number and we will confirm the closest production option before the order is placed.
