If your 2027 budget for dormitory, hostel, mining-camp or student-housing beds is still open, the next six weeks are the cheapest window you will get this cycle. Three things are moving at once: steel input costs are softening in China, the US furniture tariff schedule has hard deadlines in November and January, and ocean freight out of Asia is climbing again. None of them wait for your purchase order.
Steel is cheaper right now — quote before winter stocking
Most Chinese steel mills are in a seasonal weak-demand trough this November. Industry trackers such as Mysteel and Xinhua describe the market as "weak supply and weak demand, costs bottoming, prices range-bound to soft" — a clear change from the +23.4% year-on-year steel rally that pushed furniture quotes up through the summer. That softening has not fully reached FOB quotes yet, because mills and factories price off forward expectations.
The practical move for a buyer: request firm quotes now, ask for 30–45 day validity, and pin the steel surcharge in writing. If you wait until late-November "winter stocking" builds, those quotes harden again. A welded all-steel frame is also the easiest product to lock on price — there is no timber in it, so you avoid the EUDR timber due-diligence file that wood beds must carry from 30 December 2026. See our steel vs wood breakdown for the full 10-year cost picture.
The US tariff cliff has dates — order before 9 November and before 1 January
The US schedule is no longer vague. A narrow Section 301 exclusion that removes the 25% layer on certain upholstered wooden seating (HTS 9401.61.6011) expires at 11:59 pm Eastern on 9 November 2026. From 1 January 2027 the Section 232 layer on covered seating rises from 25% to 30%, and on cabinets and vanities from 25% to 50% — combined duties approaching 55%. Canada-destined goods already sit at 50% under Section 338.
Steel bunk beds from China are not in those exact lines, but they already carry about 37.5% combined duty (25% Section 301 plus a 12.5% forced-labour layer), and the direction of travel is clear. The rule that matters: US rates take effect on entry for consumption, not on your order date. A December order can still clear at the old rate; one that lands in February may not. If any 2027 volume goes to the US, put the PO and the container booking in before year-end. Our 2027 steel-price playbook walks through the lock-in math.
Freight is moving up again — protect the landed cost
After a soft summer, Asia–Europe rates are back on the rise: 40ft High-Cube FCL was up about 11.4% in October, and LCL quoted near €75 per cbm — roughly 150% above the September level. Asia–US West Coast is around $7,000 per box and East Coast above $9,000, with Red Sea and Cape diversions still absorbing vessel capacity. For bulky, low-density cargo like beds, freight can be 20–30% of landed cost, so a rate swing moves your margin more than a small steel change.
Ask suppliers for all-in quotes (BAF, handling, surcharges) with 2–3 week validity, and book the container as soon as the PO is confirmed rather than after production. A 40HQ of welded bunk beds holds 80–140 berths depending on the model, so packing efficiency is where the freight saving is won or lost.
A 2027 procurement calendar that actually works
| Now – mid November | Freeze specs, request quotes with a written steel surcharge, and shortlist factories using a supplier audit checklist. |
| Late November – December | Place the PO before the US tariff cliff and before the Chinese New Year factory shutdown that closes most plants for two to three weeks. |
| Production | 25–40 days after deposit, depending on configuration and order size; MOQ 50–200 units. |
| Shipping | Add 25–40 days transit (longer to inland US or secondary EU ports). |
| Net result | A PO placed in early December typically lands a March 2027 project. One slipped to February lands in May — and may clear US customs at a higher rate. |
What we ship against that calendar
We build welded all-steel bunk, loft and folding beds to EN 747 (EU) and AS/NZS 4220:2026 (Australia/NZ), with SGS load testing at 200 kg per berth, ISO 9001 systems, and the GPSR/REACH files EU buyers now require. OEM/ODM is available on size, colour and configuration. Our certifications page lists the current test reports, and the dormitory guide and reference projects show where these beds are already installed.
On a serious enquiry we return drawings, SGS test reports and a 40HQ container-loading sheet within two working days. Download the full catalogue, or message us on WhatsApp / email with your project spec — and let's lock your 2027 pricing before the window closes.
